Protected Areas

The EAA advocates for protected areas in marine and freshwater environments that genuinely conserve ecosystems, while ensuring fair, science-based management and continued access for responsible recreational angling.

Protected Areas & Strictly Protected Areas

Purpose
Under the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, protected areas aim to safeguard biodiversity through a coherent and effective network of protected and strictly protected areas across Europe, covering land, freshwater and sea (MPA’s). These areas are intended to protect ecosystems, species and ecological processes, while supporting sustainable and socially acceptable use where appropriate.

Current status
The EU has set a target to legally protect 30% of its territory by 2030, including 30% of land (including freshwater ecosystems) and 30% of sea areas, with one third under strict protection. Guidance on designation criteria and permitted activities is still being developed, while Member States remain responsible for identifying, designating and managing protected areas.

Outlook & EAA position
The EAA supports protected areas that deliver real ecological benefits and are based on sound science.

Recognising recreational anglers as stewards of aquatic ecosystems, EAA supports the principle that anglers should not be excluded from protected areas, provided that angling activities are compatible with conservation objectives and managed in a proportionate and transparent manner.

Well-regulated recreational angling can support monitoring, compliance and public acceptance, contributing to effective protection in marine and freshwater environments.
