Eel

Eel (Anguilla anguilla)

Status & fishing opportunities
European eel is a critically endangered migratory species, with populations having declined dramatically across its entire range. The species depends on unobstructed migration routes between marine and freshwater habitats, making it particularly vulnerable to barriers, hydropower, habitat degradation and cumulative human pressures. Recreational fishing opportunities for eel are therefore highly restricted or closed in many regions, reflecting the urgent need for stock recovery.

EAA advocacy
The EAA supports strong conservation and recovery measures for European eel, based on scientific advice and long-term sustainability. EAA advocates for management approaches that address all major sources of mortality, including barriers to migration, habitat loss and cumulative impacts, rather than focusing solely on fishing restrictions.

Key policy focus
The EAA calls for effective implementation of eel recovery measures, improved river connectivity, and coherent management across the eel’s entire life cycle and geographic range. The objective is to contribute to the rebuilding of eel populations, ensuring that conservation efforts deliver real ecological outcomes and, in the long term, allow for sustainable and well-managed recreational fishing opportunities.
