Salmon (Salmo Salar)

(Baltic & Atlantic stocks)

Status & fishing opportunities
Atlantic salmon, including Baltic stocks, is a flagship species for recreational anglers and an important indicator of river and marine ecosystem health. While some salmon populations have shown improvement, many river-specific stocks remain weak or threatened, with significant differences between regions. Recreational fishing opportunities therefore depend strongly on stock status, river connectivity, and effective protection of wild spawning populations.

EAA advocacy
The EAA supports management approaches that prioritise the recovery and protection of vulnerable salmon stocks, while allowing carefully controlled fishing where stocks are demonstrably healthy. EAA advocates for river-specific, spatial and temporal management, selective fishing practices, and policies that recognise the high social and economic value of recreational salmon fisheries relative to their overall catch volumes.

Key policy focus
EAA calls for science-based, stock-specific management, improved data on recreational catches, and strong measures to protect migration routes and spawning habitats from river to sea. The overarching objective is to restore and maintain self-sustaining wild salmon populations, securing long-term recreational fishing opportunities and sustainable benefits for riverine and coastal communities.
