The EAA actively supports the EU Fishing App to strengthen socio-economic and fisheries data on recreational angling, enabling better-informed EU decisions and more effective representation of anglers’ interests.
EU Fishing App
Purpose
The EU Fishing App (RecFishing) is a digital reporting tool developed by the European Commission to improve the collection of harmonised, reliable data on marine recreational fisheries across the EU. Its objective is to support better stock assessments, evidence-based management decisions, and long-term access to recreational fishing.
Current status
Following the adoption of the revised Fisheries Control Regulation, the EU Fishing App has moved from co-design to implementation. In 2025, the system was in an advanced testing and fine-tuning phase with Member States, scientists and stakeholders. The use of the EU Fishing App has become mandatory from January 2026, with a first operational version covering essential reporting requirements and further improvements planned through phased updates.
Outlook & EAA position
The EAA is actively involved in the development and roll-out of the EU Fishing App in an advisory role, representing the interests of recreational anglers. EAA supports a mandatory digital monitoring system that is proportionate, user-friendly and transparent, and calls for continued co-design and clear guidance for anglers. Improved data will help deliver fairer, more stable and science-based fisheries management and help avoid unnecessary restrictions.
