Danube Salmon

Danube Salmon (Huchen)

Status & fishing opportunities
Danube salmon (Huchen) is one of Europe’s most threatened and iconic freshwater fish species, endemic to the Danube river basin. Once widespread, its populations have declined sharply due to habitat fragmentation, hydropower development, altered river morphology and climate pressures. Recreational fishing opportunities are therefore highly restricted and strictly regulated, and in many areas limited to catch-and-release or fully protected status.

EAA advocacy
The EAA supports strong protection and restoration measures for Danube salmon, recognising its critical conservation status and ecological importance. EAA advocates for management that prioritises habitat connectivity, free-flowing rivers and the removal of migration barriers, alongside strict fishing regulations where necessary to support population recovery.

Key policy focus
EAA promotes basin-wide, science-based conservation strategies, coordinated across borders, and closely linked to river restoration and hydropower policy. The objective is to secure viable, self-sustaining Danube salmon populations, ensuring that this flagship species can recover and remain part of Europe’s natural and angling heritage.
