On radioactive pollution from Sellafield UK

The European Anglers Alliance, representing 18 European nations and over 6 million anglers, held its 7th General Assembly on the 31 March and 1 April 2001 in Paris (France).

The European Anglers Alliance is seriously concerned about the increase in the radioactive pollution from the reprocessing plant at Sellafield in Cumbria, England. Over the last seven years the output of radioactive effluent from the plant has increased by 20 times.

Originally the United Kingdom Government planned to reduce this output by 80 % commencing 2001 but this plan has now been abandoned for economic reasons.

A new UK strategy will permit a dramatic increase of 60 – 70 % in the radioactivity of the effluent over the next five years, with untold damage to the environment for several hundred years.

The European Anglers Alliance expresses the most serious concern at the failure of the United Kingdom Government to control the radioactive output from its plant at Sellafield. This is totally unacceptable to all environmental groups with an interest in the Irish Sea, North Sea and North Atlantic at large

The European Anglers Alliance calls the European Union and the United Kingdom Government for the immediate re-introduction of the original UK plan, and a reduction in the effluent output by 80 % as soon as possible.
